Reasons Why Jiu-Jitsu is Perfect for Law Enforcement
We may have heard this phrase before, but it is common when it comes to law enforcement to observe: “maximum tolerance.” So what is maximum tolerance? It means using the highest degree of restraint when it comes to dispersing a threat.
Jiu-jitsu teaches an individual to use his body and techniques to effectively restrain an opponent. Tactically, it helps a law enforcement officer to take down and control a person allowing him to escalate or de-escalate force applied as needed.
Most combat sports also incorporate a complimentary exercise regimen. This is highly beneficial for law enforcers as engaging in this sport will not only help them maintain their physical fitness, they’ll also learn techniques that can help them perform their tasks.
Another underrated reason why law enforcers should try out BJJ is the effect it has on mental health and control.
We want to highlight three things here. The first is confidence. A law enforcer who knows ways to fend off evil apart from his usual weapons (baton or gun), is someone who can face the task head-on. He doesn’t cower in front of a challenge not because he is arrogant and overconfident, but he knows his capacity to deter evil. Second, a law enforcer engaging in martial arts is also presumed to have strong mental strength. He has the requisite mental fortitude to overcome the challenges a law enforcer faces daily. Third, BJJ is a great way to relieve stress. It provides a healthy and positive way to redirect your pent-up energy and frustration without causing injury or hurt to those around you.
When you are a law enforcer, everyone looks up to you to provide them safety. You are the last bulwark for the common people and people go to you for protection. However, an existing cause of harm does not give license to any law enforcers to just implement whatever means he thinks is right. He has to restrain the cause of the alarm while respecting the offender’s right to life. With that, the teachings of Jiu-jitsu can surely come in handy to help law enforcers become more effective in crime deterrence.
